Somerset Medical Center recently welcomed three new members to its Board of Trustees: Charles W. Brown, of Somerset, a retired human resources executive, William Sugarmann, MD, of Bernardsville, president of Somerset Medical Center’s medical/dental staff, and Cory Vergilio, MD, of Watchung, vice president of Somerset Medical Center’s medical/dental staff.

Brown spent 30 years at Schering-Plough Corporation in Kenilworth, where he held numerous leadership positions including director of employee relations, corporate director of human resources and director of human resources. He most recently served as associate ethics officer at Merck & Company in Whitehouse Station. He was president and founder of the New York/New Jersey Employee Relations council. He was also a board member for Rutgers Preparatory School and Link Middle School. Brown obtained a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from Virginia Union University in Richmond.

Dr. Sugarmann is a general surgeon who specializes in advanced laparoscopic surgery. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Connecticut and completed his residency at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, past president of the Somerset County Medical Society, former board member of the Medical Society of New Jersey, a member of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. He previously served as chief of surgery at Somerset Medical Center and is a member of the breast and colorectal cancer multidisciplinary teams at Somerset Medical Center’s Steeplechase Cancer Center.

Dr. Vergilio is board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine and has served as clinical professor of internal medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry-New Jersey Medical School. He graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School and completed internal medicine training at University Hospital, Newark, N.J. He also had advanced training in gastroenterology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, the Sammy Davis Jr. International Liver Center and Aarhus Universitat in Aarhus, Denmark.
